Key to ignition
The ignition key is the mechanical device that turns the car on. The ignition key also opens the trunk and doors. Some keys have additional functions like the panic key, trunk release or liftgate release.
The blade of the key can cause problems. A locksmith that is registered with Volvo can cut a new key for you. They can do this most of the time without having to use a vehicle.
Some Volvo keys have special features, such as red or restricted keys. These are determined by the method in which the car was delivered from the factory. Dealers can request an upgrade that disables the restricted key functions. VIDA can be used by the dealer to do this. You can also do this yourself if you own the software and tools.
These keys have either orange or red shells. They can be interchangable between vehicles, however the key fobs that are specially designed will require their shells removed before they can be used in another car. Dealers or you can modify the keys. There is no "virginizing" required with Volvo key fobs.
Remote Key
The remote key allows you to open the doors and start your vehicle. It also controls the locks and can activate or disable certain functions, such as power windows or panorama roofs. The key also has an exclusive function that disables motion sensing*. You can order this feature from your Volvo-certified dealer (you require proof of ownership) or a Volvo-certified locksmith. This key is marked in orange or red. The key shell release slider matches the color and swapping a new key blade for an existing one won't affect the functionality.
Programming (adding) the new remote is simple, just follow VIDA's instructions. It doesn't need to be a "virgin key". Sit in the driver's seat with the door shut and then press the lock button on the new remote and then the side marker light will blink, indicating that the key has been programmed.
Keyless Entry Key
A long press on the keyless button will close all windows and the panoramic roof*. The key contains a small button cell battery. The dealer can cut you a new keyless entry key, or an authorized locksmith with Volvo can as well. They can also program your Volvo keys. You can swap the shells of the key fob and it will work interchangeably.
Key Fob
A key fob is a part of the VOLVO key and contains the keyless entry function, lock and unlock. It also comes with a panic key that will activate the alarm in your vehicle. The key fob also has a button that can close your windows as well as the panoramic roof*. The key fob is contained inside a plastic shell that is a color match to your car's and also has silver buttons. you can swap the shells of keys, but the function will remain the same.

You can also make copies of blank keys using the emergency blade. However, you will need to program the key via VIDA to allow it to function in your vehicle.
